Mmmk, so it's been a while once again. But that's because life is pretty boring right now for the most part. I'm back in Ann Arbor for spring semester so all of my time is spent doing the ridiculous load of calc and physics homework I have.

Yesterday was the one year anniversary of Megan and I dating. She makes me really happy, and it's been quite an amazing year. It flew by, and it's hard to believe it's been a whole year already. Unfortunately she had class and I had class, so we couldn't be together, but she's gonna come visit on Thursday =) I love her.

To keep myself amused here, I've started renting a movie per day from the Askwith Media Library. So far I've seen:
Idiocracy- Funny. I didn't really know what to expect going into this movie, so I enjoyed it quite a lot.
Shawshank Redemption- I'd heard a lot of good things about this movie, but for some reason thought it was a horror movie (kinda like when I first watched Edward Scissorhands.) It was a good story, just very long.
Memento- Certainly an interesting movie, it was a change of pace from normal linear movies.
Brazil- I've heard a lot of good things about Brazil, but I didn't really like it that much. It had its moments, and certainly Terry Gilliam is a good director, but it just wasn't my style of movie, for much the same reason I didn't really like Bladerunner.
Fucking Åmål- (English title: Show Me Love) Despite sounding like porn, this was a pretty good movie. It was in Swedish with English subtitles, but I was pleased at how much of it I understood just by listening. It was about a girl grappling with budding lesbianism while being in love with a popular girl at her school. Despite featuring this storyline, several girl-on-girl kissing scenes, implications of both sex and masturbating, and a scene where a girl cuts herself, this movie is rated 11 in Sweden, which means anyone 11 or older can see it. Unrated in America, but I'm sure if they tried it would've been R. Sweden is so much less retarded! But yeah, this movie was pretty good, I'd recommend it for anyone who can deal with subtitles.

My list of movies to rent in the future so far (in no particular order):
Amélie
True Romance
Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead
Gummo
Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance
Sympathy for Lady Vengeance
Let the Right One In
Everything is Illuminated
Reservoir Dogs
The Science of Sleep
Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels
City of God
Cool Hand Luke

And now back to doing physics homework. Wooo.

Okay, so here's a newer more updated-y version of my schedule:

First thing to note: class never starts before noon. Fuck yeeeah.
Second thing to note: class on Friday = bad. EECS discussions = often skippable. We'll see.
Third thing to note: 16 credits. Much nicer than an unstable 14.

I deviated from the old schedule because classes were closing up quicker than the legs of women in the presence of this guy. There were no spots left for juniors in Astro 127. The stats section I wanted closed, which screwed stuff up. It was a mess. So instead of going for the bs 1 credit NS credits, I decided to just go for another EECS class. So, a rundown:

TCHNCLM 300: This is basically about writing resumes and stuff. It's an EECS requirement.
EECS 370: Introduction to Computer Organization. Assembly languages, processor stuff, virtual memory, etc. EECS req.
EECS 376: Foundations of Computer Science. Complexity, basic languages, stuff like that. Sounds like 203 on steroids. EECS req.
EECS 382: Internet-Scale Computing. Concept and design of programming systems. Multithreading, networking, stuff like that. It actually sounds really interesting to me. Flexible tech elective I think?
STATS 412: Intro to Probability and Statistics. Ugh.

Now, scheduling is tomorrow at 12:45. 7 slots left in Stats, 8 in 382. Eep!

For some reason I always feel as though I'm inspired to write stuff until I get to the lj update page. It doesn't help that I just finished large essays that I need to turn in tomorrow.

Anyway, I drafted up a schedule for next semester:
http://mschedule.com/view.php?uniqname=thomeri

14 credits. 2 EECS classes that I need. Stats 412 that I need. Techl. Comm. I also need, which is lame because it's just how to write a resume or some stupid shit I learned in HS. Astro and Geosci are 1 credit mini courses on opposite sides of the semeseter (one is Sep-Oct, one is Oct-Dec) that I have to take because I need 12 natural science credits, and the physics 140/141/240/241 sequence only covers 10 of those. Unfortunately this also means no room for Swedish. sucks, but it just doesn't fit in this semester and I already have my language requirement done.

Oh, and I'm staying here for Spring semester to take Physics 240 and retake Math 215 (Calc 3). Pretty lame, but oh well.

Next year East Quad.

Now I'm tired.

So I don't suppose I've for seriously updated my lj in quite a while, and I'm supposed to be studying for EECS right now, so as a cliche, I may as well.
As I just said, still have my EECS exam. This is scary because 281 is supposedly the hardest EECS class in the department (except perhaps 381, but that one isn't required) I've been doing fairly well in it up to this point, but sorta zoned out the last couple of lectures. Reading the lecture notes, I think I understand everything, but I can't help but be somewhat paranoid.
I finished French yesterday. Like, finished French. I won't be taking any more French classes, which is really strange for me because I've had French since 10th grade. 4 and a half years. I'm really hoping I stay decently fluent in it, because it's not something I want to forget, but I know what even long summers can do to my knowledge in French, so I probably will.
Swedish was done on second to last day of class. I got an A-, which I'm fairly happy with. The last day of class we just played Swedish scrabble, which mostly boiled down to having our teacher walk around and tell us words we could make because we all had a very limited vocabulary, haha.

This is my schedule for next semester: http://mschedule.com/view.php?uniqname=thomeri
Scand 104 is second semester Swedish. Fairly straightforward.
Ling 272 is a linguistics class about Race & Discrimination related to language. It counts as an RE credit and actually sounds decently interesting, so I'm excited for that.
Physics 140/141 is base level physics that I need for my CS degree.
Womenstd 375 is History of Witchcraft, which should both be really interesting and hilariously easy (as in, the only assignments are in-class assignments, 30% of the grade is attendance, and two of the three exams are take-home exams)

Finally, started looking for housing for next year with Franz yesterday. We found some pretty decent 4-bedroom houses/apartments, one of which called me and woke me up at 9:30 this morning =( Hopefully we can having something nailed down by the time second semester starts. And hopefully, it's the space cube on S. University, which is my new dream home.

okay, back to TRANCE MUSIC AND SORTING ALGORITHMS FUCK YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH DAWG

"I think the voters were thinking, well, if it makes them happy, why shouldn't we let gay couples get married. And I think we made them realize that there are broader implications to society and particularly the children when you make that fundamental change that's at the core of how society is organized, which is marriage," [Jeff Flint, Propostion 8 supporter] said.

Implications to the children?
http://www.pgporn.tv/

This is such a great concept, and the first episode is pretty funny. I'm interested to see where it goes. Quoting the site:

"How many times have you been watching a great porn film – you're really enjoying the story, the acting, the cinematography – when, all of the sudden, they ruin everything with PEOPLE HAVING SEX?

A bunch of times, right?

That's why I, along with my brothers Brian and Sean, have created JAMES GUNN'S PG-PORN. It's pornography everyone can enjoy, not just perverts. You and your grandmother, for instance, could sit down together and enjoy some nice clean smut. Or your kids could come home from school, and the whole family could gather around the computer and not-jerk-off to some porn deeply embedded with traditional values (like not fucking.) "

So once again, instead of writing diaries in Swedish I'll just write them here in English because god damn am I unproductive right now.

Saturday I had my first experience with theatre here. All I can say is... god damn I miss theatre people. They had a thing called 24 hour theatre, where 4 shows are written in 12 hours, and then the 12 hours after that are spent memorizing, directing, blocking, lighting, etc. the shows, and 24 hours after the shows begin being written, they are performed. I had so much fun doing it (I got to be lightboard operator on my first day!) The most notable of the shows was the 4th show, called The Penis Play. It was a 20 minute musical about a guy and his dick... pure genius. I wish I had it on video, because I honestly believe that to be the funniest thing that the world of musical theatre has ever produced.

Today was my second experience with theatre here. I'm gonna do lights, sound, and set construction for a Basement Arts production of Harvey!, which is an old Jimmy Stewart movie about a guy and an imaginary rabbit. I'm pretty excited, and everyone should come see it the 23-25 =)

Now, back to my swedish homework. I need to get to sleep soon because Megan's coming to visit tomorrow and I don't want to get a cold again like last time =x

Swedish is so easy to learn. =D

In other news, later this week I'm doing tech for a theatre thing on north campus. I'm really excited. Life in general here is pretty boring. Every day is basically the same, as described in the above Swedish paragraph. On Thursday, The Novel Citizen is playing at The Blind Pig. They're a band I saw a few times in Rochester, who I've always found to be really cool. Hopefully I'll be able to make it to the show.

I went home last weekend... home being Warren. It's very strange, because I live in a dental lab there now. A rather well furnished dental lab, but a dental lab nonetheless. On Thursday, Megan came over to the lab and my dad showed us his record player, so we listened to Pink Floyd and Styx and all kinds of cool stuff on vinyl. Dark Side of the Moon has never sounded so good. Friday we went up to Yates Cider Mill and got cider and donuts and took a long walk through the woods which almost ended in us getting shot (the fence to the shooting range was broken down!) Afterwards, we went to see Burn After Reading, which was exceptionally good. Saturday, I just sat around for most of the day, then went to Megan's once she was done with work. I left Warren and came back to UM at like 10, and Josh and I went to Jeremy's 21st birthday party thing.

Now I'm all overloaded with homework, time to write more Swedish diaries (what am I supposed to write about? every day is so similar >:o )

So I'm all moved into college and everything. I started classes on Tuesday.

French- I haven't actually met my French teacher yet... apparently she couldn't make it the first week of class, so we ended up with the same professor I had last semester. Our real one will be back Monday though.
Swedish- This class is gonna be awesome. The teacher is really enthusiastic and I'm really liking the language so far, although I haven't learned much.. just the alphabet, numbers, and some basic questions/answers (fråga/svar)
Data Structures & Algorithms- Regardless of whether the professor says he's trying to make this less of a weeder course, I'm still a little terrified. I'm definitely gonna have to brush up on my programming skills because I've lost a lot of the fluency I had at the end of 280. I should be fine as long as I remain diligent.

As far as other things... my social life should be a bit better this year. I'll hang out with Christina and her friends some, plus my hall is starting to be a little more social ever since the hall meeting we had the other day.

Megan came up to visit me on Thursday... that was really cool except that my body decided to wake up with a horrible cold on Thursday morning that still hasn't quite left. I'm not such an entertaining person when I'm sick... I felt really bad. We took a really long walk through the arb which was fun because I haven't really been back there at all, and didn't realize how big/cool it is.

Felt a little better when I woke up this morning, luckily, because we went to the football game against Miami (Ohio). We played a pretty terrible game, but still managed to pull it off, so that was good. I think I've pretty much filled my football quota for the year though, it's only hockey games from here on out.

I'll try to take some pictures of my room at some point and post them here after we get our final two posters... it's looking pretty cool. Especially the ~7ft Bill Cosby poster featured in my facebook picture.

So I suppose I should stop being lazy and finally write a Lollapalooza entry.

I went to Lollapalooza August 1-3. We got up bright and early on the morning of July 31st (by which I mean Donny and I stayed up all night) and Auston's mommy came to pick us up and bring us to the bus station. That's right. Not the airport. Not the train station. The muh fuggin BUS STATION. In case you don't quite realize what that entails, on a good day, the bus ride from Southfield, MI to Chicago, IL is 10.5 hours.

So off we went, and I immediately fell asleep. I woke up around East Lansing, uncomfortable as hell. However, the bus station there is kinda fun, because someone working there managed to print off about 12 signs (not from a printer... these fuckers are like road signs) that say "PARK AT YOU OWN RISK". Ahhh, MSU, first your Beer Milk, where does it end? Anyway, we then proceeded to have a 3 hour layover in Lansing, which is kind of a nasty city. We wandered around, found the capital building, and ate at some random place where I had an egg sandwich that was pretty good. After some mildly scary encounters with people who weren't all there mentally, the bus finally came for us, and we continued our trip. Nothing particularly interesting happened for the rest of the bus ride. We got to Chicago and had to wander around a while before we could find the train station. Once we finally did find the train station, it took us the longest time to figure out which damn train to get on, partly because the train we had planned to get on didn't actually leave from that particular station. After 10 minutes of yelling at each other and Megan making fun of me on the phone, we finally figured out that we could take the same train that I've always taken every single time I've been to Chicago. So we train'd out to Hanover Park, and Donny's aunt came to pick us up from the station. We went and got Chinese food, then went back to her condo place, where I spent a half fucking hour blowing up an air mattress, after which I just passed out because i was so dizzy.

We sorta woke up in the morning. Donny's alarm went of lots of times, but we were really fucking tired. So with a lot of effort, we all eventually showered, headed down to the train station, thought we had just missed the train we were gonna need to get there in any semblance of time, but luckily found out it was late. Jumped on the extremely late, extremely crowded train, got into Chicago, and made a mad rush for Grant Park. It didn't look too bad at first... there was a line by the entrance, so we started following it back. And kept following. And kept following. And realized it wrapped around a corner of the park. And kept following. And kept following. And realized it wrapped around another corner of the park. And kept following. All in all, the line was probably about a mile long. After much waiting, we finally got our wrist bands and headed over to see the very end of Black Lips. We met up with Bryan, then went to see The Parlor Mob, who I had never listened to before but was pretty interesting. Wandered around for a little while, got some food, and went and sat in the middle of the giant field for Yeasayer. This is where my day of camping out the AT&T stage began. Hour of nothing after Yeasayer, then Gogol Bordello played. They were really fun, but the crowd wasn't really as excitable (or drunk?) as I had hoped. After Gogol Bordello, I lost everyone else and jumped on a train of people to the front, and got decently close. Bloc Party played, and I really liked them despite never having really listened to them before. In the ensuing chaos of them ending, I managed to get to about the 6th row, just a bit stage right of the center. In the next hour, I saw one of the greatest things I've ever seen in my life. Some kid about 3 rows up from me was being a fucking prick. He kept shoving everyone around and starting arguments. At one point, one of the security guards up front intervened, asking everyone what was going on. Upon everyone describing what a dick this kid was, a massive security guard reaches in, grabs the little fucker by the collar, and just whips him over 2 rows of people. Beautiful.
But then.

Then.

I SAW RADIOHEAD

They were fucking amazing, and the spot was definitely worth the ~7 hour wait (which unfortunately made me miss Grizzly Bear and CSS)

After they finished at 10, I waded my way out through the crowd of about 4 trillion people, jumped a fence out of the park, joined a crowd in breaking down one of the street barriers so I didn't have to go to a cross walk, and literally ran through the streets of Chicago to try to get to the train station by 10:40. I missed the goddamn train by 2 minutes, so we had to wait for the 12:40 train.

The next day, we had a similarly hard time waking up. We ended up missing the train we wanted to catch (or maybe this was the day that AUSTON READ THE SCHEDULE WRONG and there wasn't a train when we wanted) so we took the train out of Arlington Heights instead. Rushed to Grant Park again, and just caught the end of the Ting Tings, but it was alright because I got to see both the songs I wanted to see, and let's face it. The main reason anyone wanted to see them is because the lead singer is really really hot. After they finished, we went out on a quest for hot dogs, found some, came back, watched a bit of Foals, then went to try for a good spot at MGMT. We failed miserably, and ended up with a horrible spot, which kind of ruined that show =\ Once they were done, we trekked back over to the north side of the park to see Explosions in the Sky, which was the most relaxing live show I've ever seen. Then Okkervil River, then a little bit of Broken Social Scene and Battles, then we went back to the south side of the park for Rage Against the Machine. We ended up leaving maybe half way through their set, but they weren't bad.

Sunday we actually got to the park before any band started playing. We got really good spots for The Octopus Project. They were loads of fun, and make me REALLY want to learn how to play the theremin. After that we ate, then attempted to go to the Weakerthans, but the schedule was all screwed up (god damn canadians) so they weren't playing when they were supposed to. Wandered over to Tally Hall, who was pretty cool (especially when they covered Fatboy Slim's "Praise You"). Wandered all over, watched bits of Brazilian Girls, Chromeo, Black Kids, and Iron & Wine. At this point, Donny and I split off and shoved our way into good spots for Flogging Molly. You see, although we've seen Flogging Molly twice already, we've always seen them from the safe, boring upper deck, where very little movement is possible. This time, we decided we wanted to be down in the fold. Long story short, the show was much better when you're getting your ass kicked the whole time. Donny and I both ended up sopping wet head to toe in sweat. I crowd surfed out near the end just to try it, and it ended up being really fun. Once they finished, I found Auston and we went over to see Girl Talk, which was an odd live show. It was basically just a giant dance party. Watched a little bit of NIN after, and I was satisfied with leaving once we saw Closer. (Oh, and of course we saw 2 seconds of Kanye West just so we could make fun of Tina)

The next morning we embarked on our 10.5 hour trip back, which was actually shorter than that in literal time, because there was no layover, but we lost time in crossing the time zone border.

And then, we were home. Woo.
And now I have to go take a shower.

So, I started learning Python so I don't feel like I did nothing of any academic importance this summer. After learning a bit, it seems to be an amazingly useful and, dare I say it, fun to use language. I... think I'm in nerd love?

I woke up this morning with a mission.

Today, you see, is July 11--7/11--Free Slurpee Day----meaning that it was not only my right, but my responsibility to get as much free slurpee as I could handle. After work, around 3, I busted down Donny's door and took him with me. We printed out a map, then went and got Auston, then embarked on our journey.

Our original plan was to hit 33 711s, but unfortunately we started too late in the day for this to be possible, as many locations were out of cups or done participating by 6pm. We did, however, manage to down 12 slurpees each, (except Auston who's a gigantic pussy douchebag quitter man) one of the more unpleasant experiences of our young lives.

What a badass fucking day.

Unfortunately I'm now getting a horrible sugar crash and I'm a little pissed at everything around me.

Hmm. So I'm having this kind of weird existentialy 3am freakout concerning how fucking weird the past is, and I'm seriously having to restrain urges to get rid of all records of the past just because i suddenly feel as though nothing in the past is truly worth recording because everything is just fleeting moments anyway. [this coming from me, who can't bring myself to delete 3-4 year old aim logs just in case I ever want to read some of them again] This is such a strange freakout because I'm not even close to being depressed, nor am i worried about anything specific. It's just 3am, I'm really fucking tired, and the past seems really strange all the sudden.

god damn you George Orwell, your books make me think more than I feel comfortable thinking! (reading Down and Out in Paris and London and it's quite good so far)

okay I'm giving myself a stomach ache so sleep time. I'll be much better in the morning hahah.
